The Coordinate Graph Paper Template is a type of cartesian graph paper template, which is very useful because it allows you to draw straight lines and other objects, with precision and ease. This template contains multiple worksheets. Each worksheet contains a .25 inch scale grid with axis and labels. You may choose to work with a 4-quadrant axis or single axis grid, in either portrait or landscape orientation.

Template Contents

Here is a list of all worksheets included in this template.

.25 Inch Portrait

Graph paper at .25 inch scale, 4-quadrant axis, and numeric labels in increments of +1 and -1. This grid is in portrait orientation (for larger Y-axis values). Ideal for equations and coordinates with positive and negative values.

.25 Inch Landscape

Graph paper at .25 inch scale, 4-quadrant axis, and numeric labels in increments of +1 and -1. This grid is in landscape orientation (for larger X-axis values). Ideal for equations and coordinates with positive and negative values.

Single Axis .25 Inch Portrait

Graph paper at .25 inch scale, single axis, and numeric labels in increments of +1. This grid is in portrait orientation (for larger Y-axis values). Ideal for equations and coordinates with larger positive values.

Single Axis .25 Inch Landscape

Graph paper at .25 inch scale, single axis, and numeric labels in increments of +1. This grid is in landscape orientation (for larger X-axis values). Ideal for equations and coordinates with larger positive values.

Using The Template

Personalize and Print

Make it your own - personalize! Each worksheet has a built-in header. Use the header to include information, such as name and date.

If these configurations are exactly what you’re looking for and you want to draw by hand, just hit print - each tab is configured to print in its appropriate orientation type.

Working in Excel

Create Basic Charts

You may also choose to work with the graph paper in Excel. For example, linear objects can be inserted to help with plots and drawings. To use linear objects, select “Illustrations”, and then select “Shapes”, under the “Insert” menu. This gives you the option to include a line or a shape with greater precision by using the graph.

Example. Insert linear objects and shapes.

Insert Linear Objects Shapes

One of the easiest ways to use this grid in Excel is to create a line chart. To plot coordinates, pick a shape from the “Insert” menu to represent each coordinate and then use the labeled axis to plot out each coordinate. Next, use the same menu to insert a line to link the coordinates. There! You have ready-to-print, line chart, without lifting a pencil.

Example. A line chart with plot points created using “Insert” menu.

Customize

Change Axis Increment Labeling

This template has numerical labeling in increments of +1 and -1, which are not entered manually, but instead applied as a graphic, which is great if you are looking for a quick printout. But let’s say you prefer to work in increments of 5. You can modify the increments by, first, deleting the original numerical graphic, and then manually re-labeling the X and Y axis using your preferred increments.

Example. Deleting original graphic labeling

Note: Another way to create new labeling is to create a new image with new increments (similar to what was originally included in the template), paste the image along the axis, and adjust image to fit the grid scale.

Modify Grid Scale

As mentioned, this template comes standard with a ¼ inch grid scale. But what if you need to work in a ½ inch grid scale? You can! First, check to ensure that you are in “Page Layout” view.

Example. Page Layout View

Select the entire area, right click on any row and select “Column Width”. This allows you to manually enter the new scale requirement. Then, modify the “Row Height” to create a perfect square by repeating this step on rows.

Example. Customize grid by manual input

Note: Modifying the grid scale will displace the originally configured lines and labeling. You would need to re-adjust the labels and lines to fit the new grid scale.

Add some Color

Grid lines and graph paper color can be jazzed up just the way you like it. To modify graph paper background, select the area and use the “Fill Color” option, under the “Home” menu to charge the color of the grid. Grid lines can be altered by selecting your preferred “Line Color” and “Line Style”, also under the “Home” menu.

Example. Customizing background color and grid lines.
