World Cup 2010 Schedule and Scoresheet

It is not easy to write again after three months I didn’t write and post any templates. And, I am really sorry for not replying many comments due to my time limitation to monitor this site. But…, I am back now with my newest sport template, World Cup 2010 Schedule and Scoresheet Template. This template is the first version, because I plan to add analysis worksheet which can help you (and me of course ) analyzing your favourite teams before they play their matches.

This template is based on my previous Euro 2008 template. Because World Cup 2010 tournament consists of 32 teams, compare with Euro 2008 tournament which only consists of 16 teams, I made lay out modification to make the sheet fit nicely and properly if it is printed within one page A4 or letter paper size.

I am also adjusting the excel formula for deciding and ranking the teams that qualify to the next round after they played all their group matches, if two or more teams have same points, based on World Cup tournament tie regulation where the tie regulation is slightly different with Euro 2008 tie regulation.

I maintain the language and timezone conversion, so you can use or print this template based on your language and time zone. I would like to thanks to Google which provide a very good translation tool which translate my words in this template in seconds. But, I still need a better human translation to make it fully comply with your language. You can help me refining that translation, or add new language translation, by downloading the language file and send it back to me. I will put your name as credit in this site. There 34 different languages and 139 cities timezone available in this version. Just select your language and timezone from the dropdown list in the upper left side of the worksheet to change the appearance of the worksheet into your local language and timezone.

I add a new excel formula to dynamically manage the appearance of team or country flags in Group Standings Table. In the beginning, I plan to put that formula next to every teams in every matches. But, it makes the excel run very slow every time you change cells or fill the scores. So, I decided to drop the formula in any team matches and apply the formula in Group standing table only.

Now, let’s go to the detail on how to use this spreadsheet as your scoresheet. If you ever had download my sport templates, you will be familiar with my sport style template where there are score boxes with blue color which ready to be filled with your estimation score or real score results.And you don’t have to read this instruction. Just use it. For you that download this spreadsheet for the first time, you can read this explanation below carefully to understand how this spreadsheet works.

GROUP STAGES
This scoresheet consists of two big parts, the group stage part and the knock out round part. In the group stage part, you should fill the blue color boxes in all 48 group matches with the real score results or your score prediction. You will see the group standing table next to group matches table are changing automatically based on your input.

After all teams playing their group matches, the excel formula will place the team which quality in first and second position of the group based on group standing regulation. If their points are not the same, it is easy to place the team in first and second position. And the challenge in creating the spreadsheet is in this part, where I have to create the correct formula that will accommodate all possible condition based on FIFA tie regulation. I quoted the group ranking regulation from FIFA World Cup document :

The ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows:
a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.

If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows:
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.

At least, this tie regulation is much more simpler than Champions League Group tie regulation. I put some samples of the implementation of group ranking regulation as you can see in the pictures. I will explain the ranking regulation applied in each group to give you better understanding on this group ranking and tie regulation.

Group A (Rule a) and b) applied)
After all teams played their matches, France is qualified without question based on rule a) and South Africa is qualified based on rule b) because South Africa has a better goal difference compare with Uruguay.

Group A Standing Sample

Group B (Rule a) and c) applied)
In Group B, Argentina and South Korea are having the same point. Because both teams have the highest points compare with other teams in Group B, both teams are qualified. And based on rule b), South Korea will get the top position because South Korea scored more goals, 7 goals, compare with Argentina, 6 goals.

Group B Standing Sample

Group C (Rule a) and b) applied)
In Group C, England and Slovenia are having the same point, six. Eventhough England beat Slovenia in their meeting, Slovenia will top the group because Slovenia has a better goal difference.

Group C Standing Sample

Group D (Rule b) and tie rule d) applied)
There are three teams that are having the same points. Based on rule b), Serbia will top the group. And because Ghana and Germany are having the same goal difference and the same goal scored, tie rule d) will make Ghana deserve the runner up position because Ghana beat Germany in their meeting.

Group E (Rule c) applied)
This group also has three teams that are sharing the same points. They also has the same goal difference. But, Japan scored more goals than Netherlands, and Netherlands scored more goals than Denmark. So, Denmark is eliminated based on rule c).

Group F (Rule a) and c) applied)
In this group, Italy is topping its group and Slovakia take the runner up position based on rule a) and c).

Group F Standing Sample

Group G (Rule a) and tie rule d) applied)
In Group G, Brazil is qualified perfectly by beating all its opponents. But, the others are having the same points (3). Based on rule c), North Korea and Cote-d’Ivoire will go into tie regulation to decide which team will advance to the next round. And tie rule d) reveal North Korea as a runner up because they beat Cote-d’Ivoire in their meeting.

Group G Standing Sample

Group H (Rule a) and tie rule g) applied)
This group will use tie rule g) to decide whether Chile or Switzerland that will accompany Spain advance to the next round. Both teams are having the same points, goal difference, goals scored, and also they are sharing the same point in their meeting. So, FIFA will draw them, and in this example, Chile is lucky. But, I haven’t finished to create a drawing table that can be manually filled. In this spreadsheet version, this ranking is still based on FIFA rank, used for group drawing. I plan to reveal a drawing table when some teams are going to be drawn and can be filled manually in the later version.

Group H Standing Sample

As additional information, this is the FIFA team ranking used as group drawing lots reference . I took the information from Wiki.

KNOCK OUT STAGES
When all group matches are finished and the team that qualified are revealed, the excel formula will place all teams in their corresponding match boxes based on FIFA rule. And if all first seeded are topping their group, you won’t see Brazil vs England in World Cup final .

In knock out stage, you have to fill the score in one or three blue blank boxes in every matches to reveal and put the winner to next round. If the match is ended in normal time, you just fill the first blue box and the final score will reveal next to each team name. If it has to go to extra time, put the tie score in the first blue box, and put the extra time score in the second blue box. If the match has to be decided by penalty shoot out, put the tie score in extra time box and put the penalty score in the last blue box to reveal the winner of the match. You can the sample in the picture below.

Do the same steps until the final match which will reveal the 2010 World Cup Champion. And before the champion is revealed, feel free to play with those score boxes.

I plan to release the next version which will have player information, match analysis based on player stats, team head-to-head statistic and also other layout types. I hope I can release that in May. And I will separate the templates into several files, so you can choose which template that suit your needs.

Unless, of course, this is just some crazy numbers to fill the grids. Please let us know how you came to those conclusions so we can decide if its okay for you to be back to your responsabilities or send you back to the rehab program…

In your scenario for Group C above, Slovenia and England both have 6 points, but Slovenia has a better goal difference than England (+3 to +1). Slovenia should therefore finish first in the group (tie breaker b).

I think a similar mistake is made in your spreadsheet.

First tanks for a good/user-friendly program.
One thing though, in Group C, with:
- England-USA 1-1
- Algeria-Slovenia 2-0
- Slovenia-USA 3-2
- England-Algeria 2-0
- Slovenia-England 0-0
- USA-Algeria 2-0
USA should be second before Slovenia and not third after Slovenia as the goal difference in all group matches prevails over Slovenia’s win over USA.

Hi – I have a compatibility. I am running this with Excel 2004 on Mac. I assume this was created with the latest PC version of Excel and the compatibility problem means very slow to operate and a tendency to crash. I did not have this problem with other spreadsheets that I have used over the years from this site (typically formula 1 2008, 2009).

Hey,

I love your scoresheet. Unfortunately, I found two small errors. In the quarter finals, you put Match 59 as “Winner Match 51″ vs. “Winner Match 52″. This should be the other way round; 52 plays at home against 51.

In the semifinals, there is a similar error: Match 61 should be played among “Match 58 winner” vs. “Match 57 winner” and not 57 – 58 as it stands now.

Either you can update this, or you can send me the password so I can update it for myself. It doesn’t matter for me =)

I am attempting to copy the page but ahen I enter the scores it does not update the leagues. How do i do this as I want to send copies to workmates so they can fill it in and return then I can link it to a a master and calculate scores. Hope you understand this.

Great sheet, incredible even. The tie breaker based on Head to Head results is not working though, using the examples on this site Groups D and G error with #N/A instead of 2nd place. Any chance you can explain the workings behind this, I’m lost in the formulas!

Real good stuff!

Unfortunately I’ve found some mistakes:
Matches 21,22,23,41,42,43 and 44 are not as on the FIFA schedule. Same for 59,61, here the team position are excahnged.
Do you think you update the file?

Great sheet…
Just one observation regarding the timezone for Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi. The time difference is 3:30hrs however the sheet displays it as 3:50hrs due to which the timing is off by 20 mins.

Hi, this rule does not work correctly:
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows:
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;

If you input all 1-0 for the group games then the top two teams will have identical points and goals for/against but the team that beat the group winner is actually in second place. It should be the other way around.

Nice job, but just a heads up (positive criticism). Your team ranking mechanism within groups is flawed. I am saying this because I was looking for a new script to fix my own spreadsheet and found your model, and saw that you happen to use the same concept as I did. In rare occasions it sends the wrong team to the round of 16.

To prove it: try the following combination of scores for group A
South Africa 0 1 Mexico
Uruguay 1 1 France
South Africa 1 2 Uruguay
France 1 1 Mexico
Mexico 1 1 Uruguay
France 1 0 South Africa

France is mistakenly sent to round of 16, instead of Mexico…
To fix it I came up with a different ranking system that did the job. Just send me an email if you are interested in it, and I have no problems sharing it with you.

The translation in Bulgarian is not correct and it has some “funny” things, for example “D” in the table is translated as “paint” instead of “equal score”. So, if you send me a file I will make the translation right.

Awesome spreadsheet for the World Cup!!

Running your spreadsheet on Excel 2010, the standings tables appear so small the numbers in the tables are barely visible. It is as though it is bringing from A3:AC53 rather than T3:AC53.

problem with XL 2010 (beta) – the merged & centred cells on the main sheet cause the linked picture to contain all of the “timezone” sheet.

If you unmerge the cells the linked picture reverts to what it should.

works fine in XL 2007

to get it to work in XL 2010 you need to unprotect the “Tournament” sheet (password AABAABAABBBD)

go to cell N2, unmerge the cells.
go to cell b6, unmerge the cells.
go to cell b8, unmerge the cells.

re protect the sheet.

save the file

close the file and re-open it and the standings tables are fine i.e. the picture link is just the standings tables, not the whole “countries and timezones” sheet.

Dear Admin,

Excellent work! One small error. The times for Hawaii (Honolulu) appear to be the same as the local times for the matches. I think these should be one hour earlier than the Alaska (Anchorage) times.

Thanks for helping me track the matches from multiple time zones as I’ll be in Hawaii for some of the matches and it is great to be able to see when the matches will be so I can still watch!

Great spreadsheet.
An error found in V1.44. In the German language version, “Australia” is shown as “Osterreich” (Austria). I think this should be “Australien”. National flag is OK.
Also, can the group matches be listed in chronological order instead of FIFA match number order?

Hi, in Russian version of the first download link there are few corrections needed:

in match 49 there is no group letter index of the group winner team (should be Group A winner, now simply Group winner)

also in match 56 you need to change the order of words in order to follow suit of other matches – now it says Group H winner, whereas all other matches follow this order – Winner of group H (which sounds better in Russian)

How to add more players in the way that theirs scores will be calculated automatically in the Player Leaderboard and the Player Scoreboard the same way as the scores of existing 25 players?

There is an error in the German language-pack. Australia is “Australien” in German, not “Österreich”. This would be Austria, which is not participating…

Hi there,

is there a possibilty to change the points. For example instead 100/75/50 3/2/1.
I simulated that case… but there is a problem with the 1 Score… sometimes it shows 50.
I think when the score of the game has a difference of 1 goal. For example. If i bet 3:1 and the game finishes 2:1 then it will give me 50 points instead of 1.
Anyone knows a solution?

BTW, when I open this http://exceltemplate.net/download/1/ with Excel 2010, the “Standings” section look like corrupted (it’s normal on Excel 2003), so that I’m using this file http://exceltemplate.net/download/6/. I just wonder if you can make another compatible version of this spreadsheet for Excel 2010 (with flags, of course ^_^).

When I change language to german/deutsch I fund out there is an error by the first game from germany. “Deutschland-Österreich”, Österreich didn’t make it to the WM 2010, ‘maybe next time’. It should be Deutschland-Australien. In fact all the Australian games are writen over with Austria.

For the “drawing table” (If FIFA have to draw lots to see who goes through from the group stages).

I think this is how it works: -
Manually fill in the pop up table by entering “1″ for the winner, then enter “2″ for the runner up.
This appears to correctly place the winner in the knockout stage.
Likewise, if there are three teams tied, enter “3″ against the third team and if there are four teams, enter “4″ against the fourth team.

All fields in the pop up table have to be filled in.

I hope this is correct. Seems to work for me.

but i want you to know, when i use the world cup 2010 schedule i found a little mistake appears on the team ranking table on the right, for example if two teams are equals in points but one of them has for example 3 goals for him and 2 against so the result is 1 for, and the other has 2 goals for and 5 against so the result is (-3) meaning against, the second team will be the winner which is wrong
please take an example by entering Group A and D scoring results with the actuals scores and see what will happen

Hi, thanks for the excellent job creating this template. However there is some minor bgs that need to be fix. After the Australia vs Serbia match, the team ranking on the right, the top 2 team in Group E, F G and H turns the blue color even though they have played only 2 matches. I am using both v1.44 and v1.45

One improvement:

I’ve used the spreadsheet to predict placings, by filling in the results beforehand.

Unfortunately, when I later update the results by blanking them, the tables of the groups don’t get updated afresh, so teams’s results & points remain unchanged from the last predictions.

It would be great if the tables could reflect the updates when results are re-set to blank.

Hi Great Chart. Seems a little blip on final games of group H.
I’ve filled in all scores to date (final games are still to be played), but if I put in theoretical scores of Chile 0 1 Spain ,and Swiss 1 0 Honduras, Chile stay in second place in the table but we get #NA as their name and a string of zeros in the other cells.
Not a complaint – I couldn’t come close to creating a spreadsheet like this.
