UEFA Euro 2008

[ Picture 1 - Enlarge ]

Following the European football biggest event this year, I made a match schedule and scoresheet template from excel that can be used as your reference for match schedule and scoresheet. This template equipped with formula that will automatically calculate the group standings of each team, based on Euro 2008 match regulation, everytime the score is filled in group matches.

When all group matches have been played, the template will automatically put each group winner and runner up in the template and you just simply put the score in the correct score cells. The formula will continue to work until the champion is revealed.

[ Picture 2 - Enlarge ]

There is a list of city time, so you can pick your city time as your match reference. And also there is several country name in other language for you to ease your country name preference which participate in this event.

More detailed about this template and how to use it are as follows :

Open the file and you will see the appearance as picture 1. If you want to change your country name, put your cursor on the country name preference cell and the dropdown list will appear for you to choose, as you see in picture 3. The default of country name is in English language and not all language available here.

If you want to change your city time, put your cursor on city date and timepreference and the dropdown list will appear for you to choose, as you see in picture 4. The default of time is Vienna, Austria time.

When the result of each matches is revealed, you can put the score in the score cells in the template, where the cells are in the light turqouise colour when it is empty as seen in picture 5. The standings at each group will be adjusted automatically when the score cells is filled correctly.

The picture 6 will show you the group standings sample when all teams have played all their group matches. You can see when several teams are tied in points, the standings is adjusted according UEFA Euro regulation.

The regulation for teams which have the same points based on article 7.07 of UEFA as follows :

Article 7.07

If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of all the matches in their group, the following criteria will be used to determine the rankings in the order given :

a. number of points obtained in the matches among the teams in question;
b. goal difference in the matches among the teams in question;
c. number of goals scored in the matched among the teams in question (if more than two teams finish equal on points);
d. goal difference in all the group matches;
e. number of goals scored in all the group matches;
f. coefficient from the qualifying competitions for the 2006 FIFA World Cup and 2006/08 UEFA European football Championship (points obtained divided by the number of matches played);
g. fair play conduct of the teams (final tournament);
h. drawing the lots

Euro 2008 Group Standings

[ Picture 6 - Enlarge ]

When all the group matches is finished, the teams which will meet in quarter final will revealed in quarter finals area. Different from the group matches when ‘draw’ is allowed as a match result, in quarter finals, it has to be a winner, which can be decided from normal time period, extra time period or penalty shoot out. Just fill the score on the correct cells and the formula will calculate the result for you. You can see the sample from picture 7

Quarter Finals

[ Picture 7 - Enlarge ]

The process will be the same for semifinal and final. All you can do just fill the score in the correct score cells, and when all the score cells is filled, the champion will be revealed as the sample you see in picture 8.

Euro 2008 Champion

[ Picture 8 - Enlarge ]

By the way, I am not a fan of Portugal eventhough the sample shows Portugal as Euro 2008 Champion. I just put all the number in random. You can do this as I do.

You can download the excel template here.

Let me know if there is any bugs.

Have fun !

———————————————————————————-

After each team played twice in within their group, there is one match between Turkey and Czech Republic that will be end up in penalty shoot out if their match result is draw, based on a new Euro 2008 regulation. Just in case, if it happened that way, I prepared the new excel sheet to facilitate that match. I just made the simple function to accomodate this, because it is only one match.You can download it here.

    Hello
    First of all, thanks for the template, it is clear and usefull.
    My problem is that I have tried to play with a group a situation: every match has the result 2-1 and Russia won against Greece and they have the same points but in the end Greece comes to top of the group. So the Article 7.07 doesn’t succeed here.

    Spain 1 - 2 Russia
    Greece 2 - 1 Sweden
    Sweden 1 - 2 Spain
    Greece 1 - 2 Russia
    Greece 2 - 1 Spain
    Russia 1 - 2 Sweden

    Group D P W D L F - A Pt
    Greece 3 2 0 1 5 - 4 6
    Russia 3 2 0 1 5 - 4 6
    Sweden 3 1 0 2 4 - 5 3
    Spain 3 1 0 2 4 - 5 3

    Sorry for my poor english.

    Thank you for your correction. The bug is already fixed. You can download the newest excel spreadsheet.

  4. Rik on May 20th, 2008 3:55 pm

    Hi! Is it possible to add Swedish as Country Name Preference??

    Thanks

  5. Rik on May 20th, 2008 4:13 pm

    Perhaps one could add a box where one can fill in the actual result and one where one can fill in the points.

  6. Rik on May 20th, 2008 4:51 pm

    My previous comment is in reference to if you want to make it a score prediction game…

  7. mac on May 26th, 2008 8:40 pm

  8. josmith on May 27th, 2008 12:29 pm

    Is it possible to have the password in order to change some things on the page

  9. Eduard on May 29th, 2008 12:27 pm

    Very nice and useful excel document.

    I found a small problem, when playing with different results :

    Group A : (partial results)
    ==========================

    Switzerland 4-3 Czech Republic
    Czech Republic 2-5 Portugal
    Switzerland 1-5 Turkey
    Turkey 0-1 Czech Republic

    will go to the following partial standings (see error in formula : standings for
    Switzerland not displayed)

    Group A P W D L F - A Pt
    =====================================

    Portugal 1 1 0 0 5 - 2 3
    Turkey 2 1 0 1 5 - 2 3
    #N/A 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 0
    Czech Republic 3 1 0 2 6 - 9 3

    Note :
    Practically end-user is forced to fill in informations(match results) in correct order.
    Probably this error is not happening if all the results match are filled in correct order.

  10. Eduard on May 29th, 2008 1:03 pm

    Hi again,

    seems is not releated to order of filling :

    Switzerland 3-0 Czech Republic
    Portugal 2-0 Turkey
    Czech Republic 3-2 Portugal
    Switzerland 1-3 Turkey

    Rank Country P W D L F - A Pt

    1 Turkey 2 1 0 1 3 - 3 3
    2 Switzerland 2 1 0 1 4 - 3 3
    3 #N/A 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 0
    4 Portugal 2 1 0 1 4 - 3 3

  11. Eduard on May 29th, 2008 1:12 pm

    and problem is the same even when all group results match are filled in.

    Rank Country P W D L F - A Pt

    1 Turkey 3 1 1 1 4 - 4 4
    2 Switzerland 3 1 1 1 7 - 6 4
    3 #N/A 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 0
    4 Portugal 3 1 1 1 7 - 6 4

    Switzerland 3-0 Czech Republic
    Portugal 2-0 Turkey

    Czech Republic 3-2 Portugal
    Switzerland 1-3 Turkey

    Switzerland 3-3 Portugal
    Turkey 1-1 Czech Republic

    Good day!
    Great thing, thank You!!!

    I got a little problem, … tried to copy template on my MDA II compact, but couldn’t do it because file is protected and activesync can’t convert it to .pxl. Help please!
    Thank You in advance.

  13. Eaddie on May 31st, 2008 4:31 am

    Hi. Firstly, thanks for your template.
    I came from Jakarta, Indonesia. I think your time preference especially for Jakarta is a hour faster. For example, the opening match should begin at 00.00 (my area time) instead of 23.00 (as in template).

  14. Admin on May 31st, 2008 9:01 am

    Hi Eduard,

    Thank you for your correction. The problem is already fixed. You can download the latest excel file here.

    Hi Dzaba,

    I will make pxl file for PDA, and release it in a few days.

    Cheers

  16. Admin on May 31st, 2008 9:04 am

    Hi Rik,

    My friend are working on that kind of prediction game. Probably he will release within a week.

    Peace

  17. Admin on May 31st, 2008 9:09 am

    Hi Eaddie,

    Basically, there is a GMT changing time for European Country from late March until late October, that’s the reason when you see the live TV of european soccer within one season, the time schedule within that months is shifted by one hour.

    But, after I checked your local time, your preference on Euro 2008 in Jakarta is right, because I followed the different European timezone. It already fixed in the latest version of Excel. You can download it again.

    Thanks.

  22. Eduard on June 2nd, 2008 2:13 pm

    Hi again,
    thanks for your quick feedback. Still problem in implementing article 7.07 of UEFA . See below.

    Switzerland 1 - 0 Czech Republic
    Portugal 1 - 2 Turkey
    Czech Republic 2 - 0 Portugal
    Switzerland 1 - 0 Turkey
    Switzerland 0 - 4 Portugal
    Turkey 3 - 0 Czech Republic

    Group A P W D L F - A Pt
    Switzerland 3 2 0 1 2 - 4 6
    Turkey 3 2 0 1 5 - 2 6
    Portugal 3 1 0 2 5 - 4 3
    Czech Republic 3 1 0 2 2 - 4 3

    Wrong : Portugal must be on last place because lose dirrect match with Czech Republic.

  23. alvin on June 2nd, 2008 2:26 pm

    Hi…my friend’s can i change that your match template because it’s in protected, can you give me that password ?

  24. Nad Ramzan on June 3rd, 2008 12:03 pm

    Thanks,
    Nad

    Hello, i like your file. I was thinking about using it for a pool. Can you provide me the protection password so I can modify it for a pool? Please…

    Thanks,

    Brocko

  26. Admin on June 3rd, 2008 3:17 pm

    Hi Eduard,

    Basically, I am already aware about that issue, but there is no need to do some adjustment on third and fourth ranks in group phases because it doesn’t count to anything. Article 7.07 of UEFA is tend to regulate which country deserved to go to the next round when their points are equal after completing all their group matches.

  27. Admin on June 3rd, 2008 3:54 pm

    Dear Darek, Josmith, Lirar, Neil, Alvin, Ned and Brocko

    About the password, I already gave it to my friend who also try to develop some euro 2008 game. He said he will post his excel within two days, and his excel will be without password, so you can modify the excel sheet for your needs.

    I cannot spread my password because it is my main password for all my application. And I cannot just made my spreadsheet open without password, because it would be better when the excel sheet is in use, all cells are protected well to prevent misstyping that can break the formula.

    Peace

  28. Mazzito on June 5th, 2008 11:10 am

    thanks for this good excel template euro 2008 schedule, but the problem is like the other else is the password. and as your answer before, we will wait for the new excel template within 2 days. now is the 2nd day :D

  29. Admin on June 6th, 2008 2:01 am

  30. jonny on June 8th, 2008 3:36 pm
